Liposuction is an appropriate treatment option for localized areas of fat that become disproportionate with other areas of the body. Liposuction can be performed on almost any area of the body as needed for contour improvement, including the abdomen, buttocks, chin, hips, and thighs. This operation involves tiny puncture incisions in the skin for the introduction of narrow tubes used to aspirate the fat.
The operation may be performed either under general anesthesia or sedation, on an outpatient basis. Liposuction is often used in addition to other procedures such as abdominoplasty in order to improve the overall outcome. Not all areas of excess fat however are amenable to liposuction alone because liposuction does not remove excess or loose skin.
