Body Contouring After Major Weight Loss
One of the newest areas of endeavor in plastic surgery is full body contouring. This is usually performed for those patients who have lost large amounts of weight, either by diet or gastric surgery. Body contouring typically refers to a series of operations, designed to remove excess fat and skin and improve the contours of the body, the first and most notable of which is called a belt lipectomy, also known as a “body lift”. In this operation, not only is the abdomen improved, removing the excess skin and fat in front but also the operation extends around the sides and back to include removal of the excess skin and fat of the flanks above the hips and buttocks.
After a belt lipectomy, many patients will choose to undergo arm, back, breast, face and thigh lifts as well, for total body rejuvenation. Plans for body contouring surgery need to be customized based on each patient’s needs, goals and skin condition.
